Since breeding season is about to start, we thought we would do things a little more practically than we’ve been doing previously.
So far, during the cooler parts of the months, we use an oil filled heater to keep the ambient temperature of the room acceptable. (Usually we try not to let the room drop below 75.)
This works, but is kind of a pain. That means you need to go in the room several times throughout the day, to check on the temperature of the room, and either turn the heater off, or back on.
This is not fun, and not to mention that we found the level of temperature control can be lacking.
So, we knew we needing to do things better, and hook up the rooms heater to a thermostat.
This would mean less worry about what the temperature of the room is doing, and tighter temperature control over the room, and allowed more focus to be given to our breeding pair.
We did a little shopping, but ended up going with the Spyder Robotics module called
Thermostat Power Module
Which costs about $44.
This module uses some 3 or more conductor thermostat wire to connect itself to a home thermostat allowing you to take advantage of weekday, weeknight and weekend programming as well as Wi-Fi enabled features if your thermostat includes those features.
We already had an extra thermostat lying around so this was an easy decision for us to try this out.
It did require us to have help wiring it up, but anyone with working eyes should be able to get it hooked up if you also happen to be blind.
So, we now have it hooked up, and working smoothly!
Now, as soon as the temp drops below 75, the thermostat kicks on, and as soon as the room hits 76, it shuts the heater off!
So far, it was a great decision to add this piece of equipment to the snake room.
